A Marine is someone who fights on a ship. Traditionally a naval ship. They are not exclusive to the United States. The navy will fight other ships. The people who would say, put down planks and board another ship to do swordfighting would be the Marines. The sailors had the skills to run the ship and it would be a bad idea if they fought and then died. You would have a boat full of people who can't sail. (Marines would be able to figure it out though... heh.)

In modern times, the Marines are usually just transported on ships and no longer do the fighting on the ships. (Like trying to shoot other people on the opposing ships.)

Marines are the fighting force of the navy. Literally...

Now in the fictional Starcraft, which is based off of the book, "Starship Troopers" by Robert Heinlin, the "space" Marines are transported on the "navy" ships to be deployed to fight on planet. (In the book they are jettisoned in pods to the surface.) The term "terrans" means that they are... creatures that must survive on terrestrial planets. In other words, the "Terrans" are humans.

Although it could be argued that the term "Terran" is used because such beings as the psychic's, or say citizens of a colony that have been separated from earth for a long time, while human, is different enough to not be 100% compatible with all other humans, thus not technically being the same "species." So the over-encompassing term of "Terran" was formed.

My theory.
