Since Screwball gave me this idea, this is an open thread to anyone who wants to show progress on their artwork.
There is no limit to what kind of art you want to put up, whether it'd photoshopped, editing, pencil art, pen, etc.
However, bunni forum rules still apply.
My own rules apply as well.
1. Please PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE for the sake of global warming and bandwidth, and organization, please keep all updates on the same post. .___.
2. Be considerate about the size of the pictures. There are those with crappy internet (like me) where the pictures will take FOREVER to load. So please keep the size in mind.
3. Please respect the artist, and if you diss them be prepared to get plummeted with pineapples. That are explosive.
4. If you are updating about 5+ times, I advise to change some images to links of the picture for the sake of bandwidth. xD

I hope that by showing progress of our artwork, we can learn something from each other. :D
Also, I would hope that everyone can take constructive criticism... <.<

---
Just because I need to release my ego, I will periodically update on this picture that I plan to outline and color on photoshop with a mouse. xD
Apparently, I can't get a tablet until I get a 2200-2300 on the SATs. Dx (insert cuss word)
IS ON HOLD. Damn laptop crashed, so I lost the file. I also have it on USB, but that means I have to recolor half of the picture.

Love: Have fun with the mouse! Maybe if you wouldn't mind I could put up a few random pictures I work on with a mouse as well as I do them XD ? I really like the idea of progressive work.

As for critique, I can see nothing wrong with it so far. Only so much you can do with drawing with a mouse.

Edit: Well since Love said I could, here's a picture of a butterfly I'm drawing for YniYni ;D Only the top wings are finished, the rest is still in progress... This is all done with a mouse btw... I don't get my tablet until christmas DX The program I am using is Macromedia Fireworks 8 (older version but still ok)

I'm also putting all but the most updated in spoilers to conserve space.

This is drawn using a photo as a reference (I asked Yni to pick a favourite butterfly) but I have not copied over it or anything, every detail of the picture is my own work based off the photograph. I used an eye dropper to get the basic colours from the original photograph to be more accurate with my colours: http://i46.tinypic.com/ftqagl.jpg
I enjoy doing replications of photos to drawings, mostly because it expands my knowledge of how to draw things, but also challenges me to make a complex thing into a simpler drawing while keeping the lifelikeness of the original photo. Although I can do a lot of my own and original work I do enjoy drawing from photographs as well.

P.S the quality is kind of crappy on here, but I assure you all the real thing is very very smooth :D

Edit update 1: Completed the bottom right wing.

P.S I will be reducing the size of the picture later on so you can't see all the bodgy lines I can't draw properly with a mouse XD

http://bunnibunni.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=778&d=1260525079

Edit update 2: Decided to do a bit of a step by step on how I did the bottom wings. So! Here we go!

Doing the second bottom wing: Firstly did the solid colour underneath for the shape of the wing and the white edges roughly on the bottom layer. On the top layer I did the wing vein roughly (I like to make room for a lot of error for when I am cleaning up).

Next on the bottom layer I did the light blue band of solid colour (roughly) using an 8 size brush with solid colour (no opacity yet :P).

http://bunnibunni.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=778&d=1260585890

Edit update 3: Since the last update I tidied up the wing veins so they aren't as scruffy. Next using eye dropper for colours, I did the top part of the bottom wing. Because of the solid background colour it allows for me to use more opacity (I stuck at 30% and for refining; <10% depending on colour [light or dark]) without having white bits inbetween. Used an 8 size brush again. A tip with opacity and blending, it is easier to blend light colours into dark colours rather than the other way around. For a finishing smooth feel get the middle most colour and using a larger sized brush (about 12 - 13) and ~6% opacity go over the whole darker region. It tends to blend the colours a little better overall.

http://bunnibunni.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=778&d=1260591901

Edit Update 4: I added in the black bands. It's always good to make things a little bigger or thicker than what you intend them to be. This leaves room for plenty of error and space to fix things up. Solid black, 8 size brush.

http://bunnibunni.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=778&d=1260597475

Edit Update 5: I added in the light blue bands after the black bands. As you can see the black bars have become a little thinner due to the light blue going over the top. Next on the top layer I started going over the light blue bands at the bottom of the wings with dark blue horizontal stripes. Brush size ~ 5 - 7, discretion used :p

http://bunnibunni.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=778&d=1260599800

Edit Update 6: The update I know Love has been waiting for! In this one I have finished the dark blue bands and added the finishing texture to the wings - the 'scales'. Well how I got this effect is quite easy, using solid colour I used a size 2 brush to add little dots at the edges of the colour. This not only scatters the blending to make it look a little more real but it also gives the effect of the 'scales' on the butterfly's wings. This uses the light blue, dark blue and black around their respective areas. Also cleaned up the white edges a bit. Will probably stop here for today though starting to get a headache from staring at the screen. Tomorrow I hope to get the body done (maybe later tonight as well).

http://bunnibunni.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=778&d=1260603924

And please, any feedback and constructive criticism is very welcome. I hope that my small step by step guide can all teach you something :D

aaa.. the title is mouse... I don't use mouse :'( ...

btw lovelight: get used to use as minimum layers as possible except if you plan to make them into separate pieces (like in game making) because mixing colors in one layer will make you get used of thinking every shapes, every colors, in harmony. (ok, I actually not really remember the advice..)

ok here we go.. a scene in find tealy 2 that I have been procrastinating at.

line: normal brush, 80%, shape dynamic.
http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/1056/ftconcept1.jpg

Here are the full screenshot with layers. As the practice I say before, I only separate layers if they going to be separated from the main image later or separating line with color.
http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/7148/ftconcept2.jpg

Half colored. Only use two blue colors here and play with brush dynamic opacity.

Finished! :

Sometimes, it can be difficult because you look at one layer, and think that you'll edit it later. But you never touch it. Weird thing. Dx

This is a nice topic: art in progress! :)

Love, I like that drawing, especially the way you did the hair. The skin color seems a bit odd though. Or maybe I lived too long in SE Asia. :p

Screw, that butterfly looks amazingly real! If I don't see the original photo, I'd think it's the real thing. :)

Rose: Tealies!!! I want more tealies! Lol. Is that hairy guy going to be woompa? I agree with Screw, you did great with the ice, it really looks 'cold'.

My latest stuff I've been working today is fan art for a game that was released today:

http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p7/siamjai/fanart01_progress2.jpg

You can see how Fireworks does vector-bitmap hybrids. The part on the left is all bitmap, the creature on the right is all vector. (Excuse the mess in the Layers panel - I always work like this unless I plan the source to be public, and I didn't feel like cleaning it up for this screenshot. :-p )

*Ahem* Siam, to be honest. That is just...It's hard to explain- But what I can say, is that the person holding the camera..Or. Whatever it is, seems to be fascinated by the vector model you made. That model, it seems like it's happy, but it's pinkish eyes say to differ. At least, for me. It's wonderful- The shading is nice too. :-D Great job, Siam.

Screw- It was originally to be a face, but it ended up a bit wide, and the hair covered up the eyes. I didn't bother to make a mouth- Which is why I made part of it concealed in black (, Shadows.)

And Jillie. Keep your hopes up. You might not end up that good, but remember- There are many people who want to be able to draw like you, along with people that you would consider to be better than you, that want to draw like you- Or that they think they're bad. So, don't think you can't improve. People that could barely draw stickpeople in the first grade have ended up being quite good artists for their age. :-D

783 Here. I'm still working on it- Improving the color, shading, how sharp/blurry it is. Going to burn it a bit, see if that works out. If not, I'll just finish the background, and such.
Part two!
784 Finished~!

jillie: art is just a matter of practices.

nice looking Siam! I hate tools though, it just I don't like making straight lines, clicking stuffs to make curves or colors, etc... I just want to scratching the canvas, so I'm not fit with vector art. :P

screwbaII

I agree Rose XD I prefer bitmap to vector. I prefer the free hand although it is probably longer XD

SiamJai
12-13-2009, 08:21 AM
Hehe, I see. Yeah, vectors are less intuitive, I too have a hard time with them in Illustrator. But to me, working with vector tools is like swimming. It's awkward the first few times, but then the more you often you do it, the more natural it feels. ;) That's what I like in Fireworks, it lets me experiment with the tools to pick the right one, depending on what feel I'm going for in that piece.

Riida, great observation about the creature! At first I tried to make it more alien and not so friendly, but then it kinda changed on its own, and I guess some of that alien-ness remained there. ;)

Nice pic btw, the second one truly shows improvement! I'd suggest blurring the right side of the rectangle just a tad bit more for balance.

Here's another picture I'm working on at the moment as well (I'm a bit of a multitasker when it comes to drawing XD) I constantly get new ideas in my head and when I do I like to get them down as fast as possible. So here is my newest one, Arachnia. Me and Ivernus rp a lot in our spare time and this is one of my many characters. She's a Golden Orb Web spider. Not finished yet, and you could probably also call her an experiment to see if insects could work in an RP. (Wow I'm really into the whole creepy crawly scene at the moment!)

A few notes on stuff I have experimented with. The pose for one, it's very strange trying to incorporate 8 limbs onto a humanoid figure! Another thing you might notice is how I have made the patterns of the actual spider look like clothes and other similar features on Arachnia.

Here is the photo reference (mainly just for the pattern and colours though, unlike the butterfly) Warning, it is a Golden Orb Web Spider eating a locust. So if you don't particularly like spiders then it might be a good idea that you don't see the real image XD (at least it isn't that picture of the golden orb web spider eating a bird caught in its web) It's also rather large so it might take some time to load for those of you with slow computers.
http://www.bioscience.heacademy.ac.uk/imagebank/uploaded_images/JulieKern_goldenorbwebspiderkillslocust.JPG

And here is Arachnia. Sorry for the size I had to make the canvas a little bigger to fit what I wanted on XD.

SiamJai
12-14-2009, 05:10 AM
That looks very good, Screw! You did a great job fitting all the extra limbs while making the abdomen only slightly taller than usual. Another way to do this could be by making all limbs start from a central origin and spread out diagonally like they do in Hindu mythology, but that wouldn't look very spider-like.

Will you do something with the lower limbs on the right side?

And yep, the colors do look insect-like, a dangerous one too, while the overall figure and facial features clearly show that she's a female. Looks like you have a thing about femme fatale characters, hmm? ;)

12-14-2009, 05:19 AM
XD Perhaps :p But as you may have guessed since she is from a private rp you can probably guess why my heroine does look a bit that way lol. I worked out what you could do with the tape to make it look more real. I think you need to make a really thin darker defining line of the tape to show it is actually an object stuck on there rather than something a part of the skin. At the moment I feel it looks more like an extension of her face rather than a seperate piece stuck on there, you just need a thin close to black line to shadow the outline of the tape... well I feel like that is what I would try anyway :S but as we know I'm not too good with anything but animals both fantasy and real so my perspective on it could be munted.

Nice screw. oh and seriously Madi, don't get so down about just how you draw =/. I used to be that way- but then Jill cheered me up, and some of the others because i thought my drawings were ugly, but, people say there not. Anyways, im quitting drawing anime :P. Not because Screw said that "thingy" ( i can explain it "perfectly" so whatever :P )

Yeah, but I don't mean just some people hate my art. The entire class and like 1 or 2 other classes do and some people at school get 100% of the compliments and the rest gets 0. The best compliment for me was "You see that? You could draw it in about 2 or 3 years. Kristyn could draw it in a minute." Aw... I think that might have been a insult cause that wasn't even a good picture.. O.o

yeah, I'll keep on improving. Remind me not to take art lessons though- I couldn't learn anything cause the teacher was scared of erasers so I couldn't erase. O.o

Saya67257

-brags on accident- i can draw anime in a minute :D .. Wait- sorry <-< . But, at least i love your art c: , and you should be practicing on your art- just like what i do, no one ever taught me how to draw and stuff. So what if other people hate your art? My brother draws "horribly" he sauys, but, i thinik he draws aweosme on stick figures. Like one day, he drew a stick figure of him, wearing sun glasses, and shooting a alien ship , and underneat it was a tank getting attacked by the ship. It.. was awesome. He also drew some more stick figures, one of me,older brother (Richard/Rj), and my sister(Jalani) . He was good at it c: . I'm probably guessing hes going to be an artist some day- and i know you'll be too, Madi. Since you draw cute stuff, like that little girl hugging a bunni-plushie, and all that epic drawing of yours. Just one word... Practice xP .

Madi2
04-30-2010, 09:38 PM
I practice and nobody cares though... when I DO make something cool like 4 fifths of the time Kristyn just runs in and says "OOOMG! You TOOK my picture! I drew it!" i've argued with her for 3 months and counting about one picture.

....and now I will post that she had lice twice in two years. HAHAHA! Oh yeah, I'm evil for posting that so I will just flush her down a toilet wasting a few lines of text.

...D:
The butterfly looks so beautiful.
I like the spotty texture-y gradient and the small details on the body..
and I like how it's not perfectly symmetrical. It makes you want to look closely at both wings.

And btw (to Madi), you shouldn't draw so that other people will like it. You should do it for yourself. Don't draw just to get an ego out of it. It can be like a secondary benefit, but I honestly wouldn't consider you an artist if you draw just to hear compliments.

If you want to concentrate on getting better, you can't listen to what other people are saying, especially if they say "THIS IS UTTER CRAP" and not provide a reason as to why it is crap. What matters if what you think. You have to look at your stuff with a critical eye and improve. Critiques are always good to have, but it's only good if you can use it.

There are people in this world who will say total bs about all of your pictures, no matter how good you are. People still say that my drawings aren't that great, but it's ok. It means that I have room to improve. And you do, too if you keep trying.
We all start from crap. Just keep practicing.

@Saya Also, speed shouldn't matter. D< It's good because you can get things done faster, and thus you might even have more time to improve it. [/somewhat jealous]

You can take art classes if you want to. If you learn on your own, that's good because you can come up with original techniques. But if you learn in an art class, you can also learn techniques that will be beneficial to you, more than if you self-teach. So.... to put it short... some art classes are great, and some are useless. You need to do something about that teacher who won't let you use an eraser.

I self-teach also, but I learn techniques from my friend, who is also a good artist.
She drew this:
http://fc05.deviantart.net/fs31/i/2008/227/a/d/Kyo_by_demograph.jpg

She convinced me to use a cross-hatching method of shading. The whole time, I basically just smeared the graphite all over the paper and considered it my way of 'shading.' But if I hadn't took her advice, today my shading on my pictures would be 8 times lighter. And the paper would look really dirty from all the smudging.

...yeah, I'll end it there before I rant too long. xD

04-30-2010, 11:46 PM
WoW your friend is also an amazing artist! I just love the detail in the teddy bear XP I can see you're both really into the pencil drawings and stuff, just like me XD !! Well I'm more into the fineliner black pens and ink drawings lol, but it's the whole black and white thing. I can use colours and stuff, but it's just sooo much effort. Although my mum suggested (and I actually thought of this too) to do portraits of the dogs I mind and see if the owners are interested in purchasing them :P In which case I would probably have to use colour (unless it's a black dog :P)

Have you done any colour ones in real life Love? I know you have done a few on the computer, but that's like me and it's really not the same lol :P

And I agree with Love, Madi, you need to draw for yourself, not for other people. Showcasing art here would be a good thing to get honest opinions and way to improve, so consider it. Being critical of yourself is way more important than other people being critical (hell if I let other people be critical of me I would get nowhere coz everyone is like OMFGWTFBBQ that is awesome, which means I would get nowhere).

Well, if you think you can improve your drawings off that statement, then I think it would be a reason why it's crap.

Otherwise, I think that's a complete crap statement.

Uhh..

Lol, nice. I like the pic :o But you have improved a lot XD His hand looks chode LOL! But yea still epicly awesome XD I have a lot of random drawing things, like pencils, textas, mungyo pastels, oil pastels etc. I like using texta because the colours are really vibrant (pretty sure I have one of my dragons done in texta in my art thread).

Starting a new butterfly too, I'll post it up the same way as the other one, except I will make sure it doesn't get ruined like the first one did in terms of the pictures being deleted (mistake on my part XP)

Well, Nick chose the butterfly so here it is:http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e2/Butterfly-green_black.jpg

And here is what I have done so far which has taken me an hour (working with a mouse again atm as I don't have my tablet with me)

http://bunnibunni.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=882&stc=1&d=1272687594

Basically what this is is the 'undercoat' of the picture. What I mean by this is it's like an undercoat of paint, it's there so when you paint over it the colours appear more rich. It's the same concept, since I use opacity a lot I find the colours are more rich if there is a base colour under it. It also provides an accurate outline of what I am going to be working on. What I tend to do is do a rough outline, and then sort of, 'shave' off the colour with the eraser tool to the angles and such that I want (works well in terms of using a mouse). It means you can have accurate lines that look relatively neat as well. I will show you guys that concept on the other side. The random grey line is pretty much just a separator, to define the two wings.

Not really happy with the left side of the bottom wing though, so it will probably be changed by next update (it's probably the main reason why this part took so long). I'll probably hae to reconfigure the whole of the bottom wing to do that though lol :\ It's probably at more of an angle than I want it to be as well, but that's an easy fix and will be changed by next update as well.

The next installment, probably about another hour later :P
http://bunnibunni.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=882&stc=1&d=1272691970

Basically as you may or may not be able to tell I spent a bit of time fixing up the bottom right wing, although still not completely satisfied, it will certainly do!

Next is the left hand side sketch of the wings. I have not used the eraser tool at all so you guys can see what it looks like before I do all the 'fixing up'. My mouse using skills are far from professional looking in this one. I feel the wings are a bit the wrong shape and I hate it when it looks like this lol (Usually I will 'fix up' as I go but for the sake of showing this I didn't). Fix up time!

Approximately 1 hour later..... :p
http://bunnibunni.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=882&stc=1&d=1272694536
Finished the fixing up, made a few tweaks to the shape of the already drawn wings. Still very rough but won't be too noticeable once the colour comes on.

So about three hours of work here so far, and not even started the good bits :p

The end of layer 2:

4. If you are updating about 5+ times, I advise to change some images to links of the picture for the sake of bandwidth. xD

Can i have art lessons from you!!! Please??? Dx . Your a master of all times at it Dx

Dx (insert cuss )

The game came before the anime.
The anime was based off the game, and then it became a manga.
Each are pretty similar, but with small differences. xD

Though, its more easier if they made the anime first than to make the game first o3o.

I'm working on a flash siggy, I'll upload it in a few.

There'll be more frames and it'll look smoother in about 10 minutes xD
Never mind, I got it up now.

If I had it attatched, 'twould make you download it to view it.

It's run at 15 fps (frames per second) and using swatches, I knocked the brightness up by one swatch each frame. It goes from white to the palest yellow possible, then tracks back (which I did manually)

SiamJai
06-22-2010, 02:58 AM
Fireworks is awesome! I use it all the time. Yeah, it's easy to do animations with it, but its strength is its bitmap-vector hybrid nature, editable live effects and image optimization. Pretty much everything I've done comes from, or at least has gone through, Fireworks.

For someone with Photoshop background, the good news is that works with PSDs and supports many PS effects. It improves Photoshop's meager support for vectors too. The bad news is that FW is rather 'meh' when it comes to brushes. It covers the basics, but it doesn't offer nearly as many custom brush options as PS.

If you want to give FW a go, I suggest CS5. Though not much different from CS4 in terms of features, it's much faster and more stable. :)

It's only a problem if you try to push your religion onto people coz honestly I hate it when people do that and since I'm agnostic I don't really sit on either side of the fence and won't until God can either be proven or disproven, so any religious stuff doesn't offend me.

Also it's hard to not suddenly jerk the mouse to the side and screw up your drawing. Although that's just me griping about my inability to draw on the computer. TIME TO REVIVE THE THREAD. (gets shot)

Here's something I've been working on for about two weeks on and off.
I estimate that I've actually spent about no more than an hour working on this.

Drew this to compensate for my not being able to draw heads anymore. ...Dx

http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff193/mirrorofmystics/Mennequin.jpg

I can't finish it though. I mean, yeah, I have to finish shading the rest of the clips and the grenade and finish up on the shading on the body, but I also have this urge to stick a background on there, which I can't do. (yay for run-on sentences)
I don't know what to do.

Here's the story behind this if anyone cares (I'll try to make it brief):
Korean soldier meets Korean nurse on the battlefield IN KOREA. (epic)
Anywho, they met, fell in love, and decided to elope in Australia. Ditching the war in the process.

Life was good. The war nurse found her way into working as a personal nurse for a rich family, which is where all the income is actually coming from. The ex-soldier opened a toy shop. They had a daughter named Desiree.

After Desiree turned 6, the wife was found dead. The husband was not provided with much information other than how the wife died (asphixiation and mutilation). He wasn't even also to see the corpse because it was horribly mutilated and the officers thought it was best if he didn't see it.

The aftermath wasn't pretty. The husband started drinking heavily, and 6-year old Desiree was often neglected. The only thing that kept them from going homeless was the huge saving the wife had when working. The husband started getting nightmares of his wife and often confused them into his nightmares about the war. He now convinced himself that his wife died in the war. He went quite delusional and started making up his life story as to how he lived after the war.

The picture drawn is the image he sees in his nightmares. Combined with his job as a mannequin-maker, he convinces himself that he can 'revive' his wife by recreating her image as a mannequin. However, the only reference he had other than pictures, is the image he saw in his head, which was his wife being torn apart on the field by the sounds of his own machine gun.

----

Nice, Screw.
Saw this in your diary, and now I can comment. :D

Ehem. I like the idea. Pretty unique.
The critiques I can give (if you want it) is that you could've made more of a fading effect on the mascara (though I guess it's fine as it is).
And also, maybe you could've made the picture bigger (like twice as large), so that you could've worked on the details more.
Like... I'm seriously dying to see the small glitter/shine on the lips and the details on the eyes. It feels like because of its size, I can't clearly see everything.
Also, I think you should trim the horns. Make it look more sharp, and also make the shading darker. The details on the horns are pretty nice, but I think it'll pop out more if you make it darker.

Otherwise, I like it. The colors are really cool, and the designs are really cool.
Reminds me a bit like a succumbus, but I don't know if that's what your shooting for.
( Don't shoot me. Dx )
Like I said earlier, the details are pretty nice, like the lips, eyes, and hair.
Just wish the picture was bigger so that I can see the details more clearly
Really, good job otherwise. :]

What program did you use on this?

(btw, it was kind of awkward writing this because I wanted to say "your details on your lips are lovely, and your detail on the eyes are breath-taking" but that sounded weird LOL)

screwbaII
08-22-2010, 07:36 AM
XD Yea it's because of the quality for uploading it onto here = smaller and jpeg -.- That's why it's all fuzzy and stuff. And WOW you guessed it right, it is meant to be a succubus me :D

Nick chose all the colours and stuff though (including horn style and such) so yea, I was just colouring it in XP But yea the picture is actually larger and a lot less fuzzy originally. Thanks for the tips XD I'm gonna try and do a couple of different ones maybe when I have time. I pretty much just took a picture of myself and coloured it in basically, because it's really freakin hard to do self portraits (have you found that o.o?) I guess since you don't see your own face as often as everyone elses, your perception is kind of warped or something, I dunno XD. I find it hard to recognise myself like that but Nick said it was me instantly, so yea it's weird XD.

Lovelight
08-22-2010, 08:03 AM
Well, now that you mention the quality...
It seemed a little off at some parts. I couldn't really think why it seemed off, but yeah.. quality. I'm sure you could do something about it, but then again if you could I guess you would've already.

I tried doing a self-portait (back in 5th grade). Failed.
And you're right; it's more difficult because your perception of yourself is a bit warped.

I considered trying to do vector, like you did, but it seemed kind of odd and frustrating because realism isn't really my area in the first place.
And when you screw up on your own self-portrait, it kind of pulls down your ego.
(I like my ego)
But you definitely pulled it off well. It feels like it's missing shadings in a few areas, but it could be that there's not that much lighting in the original photo anyway.

I could've guessed it was you. Mainly because of the hair though.
Yeah, I remember your awesome bi-colored hair. (is that a word? LOL)

Hope to see more of this with better quality. :]

screwbaII
08-22-2010, 09:18 AM

Haha, succubus Screw, how fitting! :-p
I especially like the face markings - did you do that with the wacom? It's kinda challenging to mark uneven 3D surfaces on 2D, and still look realistic, but you did great here. (unless actually marked your face before doing the manip, hehe).
